Leadership in Bloom: Building Partnerships and Food Access with Purpose

“National Service offers an incredible opportunity to do meaningful work, develop professionally, and make a tangible difference in communities. It’s a purposeful path that helps you grow while giving back.”

As the AmeriCorps VISTA member at Muskingum Soil and Water Conservation District, LaTrell Davis’s project has focused on Urban Greens, an initiative aimed at addressing food insecurity through the development and expansion of community gardens. At the moment, LaTrell’s site supports six different community gardens and is working to build infrastructure, secure funding, and implement sustainable systems.

Throughout his service, one of LaTrell’s most significant achievements has been establishing partnerships and sponsorships with local businesses. These efforts have played a key role in increasing both awareness and support for the Urban Greens initiative. By identifying needs, securing grants, and developing lasting systems, LaTrell has spearheaded the strategic growth of this project.

“I plan to carry these experiences forward by continuing to engage in purposeful work that uplifts the communities I live in and serve, particularly through initiatives that combine advocacy, sustainability, and direct community impact,” he says.

Following his service term, LaTrell is excited to continue community development work, applying his outreach and consulting skills for a broader impact. He also plans to pursue additional professional certifications or even continue his education.

Although he has sometimes faced challenges trying to build new systems with limited resources, LaTrell feels that service has taught him the importance of persistence, creative problem-solving, and strong community relationships. Overall, being a VISTA member has proved a defining moment both personally and professionally.

“This experience has been deeply personal and transformative,” says LaTrell. “Having grown up in poverty myself, I relate to the individuals and families we serve. It’s been both humbling and empowering to be part of the solution.”

To anyone considering the option, LaTrell would confidently recommend a year of service.

Great work, LaTrell!
