Finding Common Ground in Oberlin

“I think this experience has really shown me the value of community and collaboration.”

At Legion Field Community Garden in Oberlin, Ohio, ShareCorps VISTA Meena Lee is helping her organization cultivate more than fresh produce. As the garden’s Education and Outreach Coordinator, Meena is bringing people and organizations together to strengthen local food systems and expand opportunities for environmental education.

Since beginning her service, Meena has focused on increasing the garden’s visibility and building community partnerships. She has collaborated with organizations including the Oberlin College Bonner Center, Native Plant Garden Club, and OberlinKids to coordinate events, workshops, and educational opportunities. She has also revitalized the garden’s social media presence, developed a newsletter, and organized community events, including concerts in the garden.

Through partnerships with Oberlin College and Oberlin High School, Meena is connecting the garden’s work with education about local food systems and gardening methods.

“I have learned that you hardly ever have to start projects from scratch, and there are almost always people who are already doing similar work to you!” Meena shares.

Her experience has reinforced the importance of listening to others, identifying shared goals, and turning ideas into collaborative projects.

While Meena has enjoyed building these connections, adjusting to the independence of her VISTA position initially presented a challenge. With considerable freedom to manage her projects, she had to learn to trust her ideas and leadership abilities. Over time, this independence has strengthened her confidence and communication skills.

Although still early in her service term, Meena believes her work is creating a lasting impact. By establishing community partnerships and increasing awareness of the garden, she hopes to build a foundation that future VISTA Volunteers can continue developing.

Her service has also deepened her appreciation for Oberlin, a community she already loved from her time as a student.

“Having gone to school in this town, the Oberlin community already had such a special place in my heart, but getting to live and work here as a community member myself has been amazing,” she says.

Following her service term, Meena hopes to return closer to Chicago and continue working in local food systems and community outreach. She also plans to pursue higher education in public policy, public health, or agroecology.

Having experienced both direct service and now VISTA service, Meena encourages others to consider AmeriCorps as an opportunity to explore career interests, develop professional skills, and give back to their communities.

Great work, Meena!
